HS Championship Preview - Jesuit

Here at LouisianaRugby.org we thought it would be fun to get some comments from the coaches involved in this weekend's championship match. Remember- all the action is this Saturday in Gretna. $10 Adults, $5 under 18.

Are your players looking forward to this weekend?

Jesuit is definitely looking forward to this weekend’s state championship and rematch for several reasons. First, the Hurricanes are a quality and classy club that never fails to bring stiff competition. It’s always great to play them. Second, there’s nothing like championship ball. And when you pit regional rivals in a championship match, you’re talking exciting rugby. Our boys are keen for the challenge.

Are you preparing any differently for this game?

Not at all. We have a system we are happy with and which we feel has brought us continued success. Basically, we try to structure practice so that there is plenty of fun. That keeps the energy up.

What players are you counting on to lead the team?

While this may sound like a cliché, we will need to rely on every player to perform his function. Rugby is the consummate team sport, and Jesuit plays systems rugby. So every link in the chain needs to perform. That said, the success of every rugby team hinges on the decision making and execution of its halfback and flyhalf, and we are no different. We have tremendous confidence in the brains and skills of our #9, Josh Cashio (Sr) and our #10, Case Ellis (Sr). From our perspective, both are the best players in the league at their position.

Have you made any adjustments from you last game vs each other?

We are going to focus on our leaders leading more, our tacklers tackling more, and our scorers scoring more. Otherwise, same game plan.

What are some keys to the success of your programs?

There are many, many factors that have made our program successful. However, the unifying factor, the “first factor,” is personnel. We have great kids and great parents. That is a winning and essential combination that enables the coaching staff to shape the boys into great rugby players, and from there, shape them into a great squad.
