Updated: Mar 2, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Location: BREC Highland Road Rugby Pitch, 13829 N Amiss Rd, Baton Rouge, LA 70810

March 1, 2022

This Saturday, March 5th, the Winter 2nd Five Week Winter Flag Rugby Session will kick-off at the Baton Rouge Highland Rugby Pitch, 9:00am-11:00am with the inaugural Baton Rouge Area Youth Rugby Fundraising Campaign to seek the community’s financial support and to bring awareness of the fastest growing and most engaging youth sport in the United States. Baton Rouge Area Youth Rugby encourages youth to be active and to be leaders on and off the field through communication and teamwork. Ochsner will be providing free vaccinations and boosters for 12+ years and older, Moderna and J&J, patients should be prepared to provide identification and their vaccination card (or LA Wallet if they lost their vaccination card), Family Services of Greater Baton Rouge will be providing resources and Pennington Biomedical Research will be offering health study opportunities. Buffalo Wild Wings and Sonic Drive-in will be giving out swag. Enjoy the thirst-quenching day to support our very own rugby player, Marissa’s Lemonade!

The “Game Plan” for the day:

8:45 am Check-In 9:00 am Youth will divide into two age groups: U8 and U14 begin warm-ups to skill and drills. 10:00 am Groups will alternate with the health vendors. 11:00 am Youth U8 will kick-off the Baton Rouge RFC match vs New Orleans Crescent City 12:00 pm Baton Rouge RFC vs New Orleans Crescent City 1:15 pm U14 Flag Rugby Match 1:30 pm Lagniappe RFC vs New Orleans Half-moons

These two 80-minute matches between Baton Rouge and New Orleans will not be one to miss! The youth will be showcasing their skills because we are the future of Baton Rouge area Rugby. If you’re new to rugby, a game consists of 2 teams, 15 players with the object of the team scoring across the opponent’s score line or kicking the ball through the goalposts on a soccer sized field. Each player plays offense and defense by running, passing, kicking and catching the ball.

To be part of this empowering Saturday, ALL LEVELS are welcome. There will be 4 more youth rugby Saturday sessions (March 5, 12, 19, 26, and April 2) open to girls and boys ages 6-14 for Baton Rouge and surrounding area parishes, but not limited to Livingston, Ascension, and West Baton Rouge. Rookie Rugby is a two-hour weekly program: the 1st hour is spent learning rugby skills through drills and direct instruction, the 2nd hour will be game play based on the USA Rookie Rugby Flag Rugby model. This builds to the ultimate goal of competing at the annual Redfish 7s Tournament in June.

See you at the pitch and be part of a true south tradition!
