This Saturday, May 1st, the first of the five week spring youth rugby session will kick-off at the HBCU Rugby Classic with a “Rugby 101” session from 8:30am- 9:30a. It will be presented in partnership with R.O.O.T.S Rugby Family by Tiffany Faa’ee. Tiffany is a trailblazer, she is the FIRST EVER woman to coach a men's professional rugby USA team, a former USA Eagle & USA Women's Rugby Team Captain, and she is the head coach of Monroe College. After practice all are welcome to stay to experience rugby first-hand and to cheer for our very own Louisiana Lagniappe Women’s Rugby team against ROOTS Rugby Club. After the empowering weekend, the remaining sessions will continue at the BREC Highland Road Rugby Pitch for the following Sundays: May 9, May 16, May 23 before concluding with the Saturday, June 5 Redfish 7s Rugby Tournament. The Redfish 7s tournament is the highlight of the youth rugby program where participants will have their exhibition game with the winning team taking home the “Golden Boot.” Rookie Rugby is a two hour weekly program: the 1st hour is spent learning rugby skills through drills and direct instruction, the 2nd hour will be game play based on the USA Rookie Rugby Flag Rugby model. This builds to the ultimate goal of competing at the annual Redfish 7s Tournament. *To be eligible to compete at the Redfish 7s Tournament, youth must attend 95% of the sessions. Girls and Boys in grades PreK-12 from the Baton Rouge and the surrounding parishes will develop age-appropriate individual, positional and enhanced rugby skills in the three different programs: Mommy & Me Walking to 5 years old Single session $18/ Five Week Session $60 Rookie Rugby 1st grade-Middle School Single session $15/ Five Week Session $50 If you’re new to rugby, a game consists of 2 teams, 15 players with the object of the team scoring across the opponent’s score line or kicking the ball through the goalposts on a soccer sized field.
